Throughout history artists have been the storytellers of their region and thus of great importance to the identity of their home district. What would the image of today’s Värmland be without Selma Lagerlöf, Gustaf Fröding and Nils Ferlin? What would Dalarna be without Karin and Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn? What would Rackstadmuseet (the Rackstad museum) and Arvika be without the Racken artists? Sillegården and Sahlströmsgården still tell an artistic tale. The Klässbol linen weavery and Magnor glassworks are contemporary art industries with interesting stories and in-house artists and designers. It can, however, take a long time for such an artistic expression to fully reach out and become an integral part of a region’s image. There are plenty of examples from the turn of the last century and the first half of the 20th century. It took more than half a century before Carl and Karin’s Sundborn became an obvious tourist attraction. Or for the Racken artists to become the foundation for the beautiful Rackstadmuseet in Arvika.
A convincing modern day example of the power behind artistic creativity can be found in Fiskars Design Village where around a hundred artists, artisans and designers have breathed new life into a former industrial village. Fiskars Design Village has, with its living atmosphere, artist’s studios and exhibitions, now become a prominent and award-winning tourist attraction.
In Nordic Delight artists, artisans and designers work together with entrepreneurs in the culinary, hotel and tourism industries – a co-operation that seen in a longer-term perspective may become part of our time’s artistic contribution to the identity and visual hospitality of regions, occupations and locations.
