An important town in north-western Värmland, located beween Karlstad and Oslo. Founded 1811 and named “Oscarsstad” after Prince Oscar, later to become King Oscar I. In 1821 the name was changed to Arvika. After the Bergslagen railroad was built in the 1870s Arvika flourished, and in 1911 it received its town charter. A country church from the 1600s and a unique – almost odd – town church, erected in 1909 from drawings by the architect Ivar Tengbom. The Arvika church shows sculptures by Christian Eriksson, also represented in Rackstadmuseet (the Rackstad museum) in Arvika.
